DESCRIPTION:On-Farm IPM Workshops: Qualicum\nWhat: \nLearn monitoring and management techniques for pests of fruit\, vegetable\, and berry crops. \nInterested in improving pest management on your farm? This workshop will provide you with the knowledge to identify\, monitor and manage insect pests\, as well as recognize and attract beneficial insects. \nWe will start with learning some monitoring principals\, and then will take a farm tour\, looking at some different monitoring traps in action\, and trying out some monitoring techniques. We will have a look at the pests that are currently active\, and discuss management strategies that incorporate our monitoring results. We will also look for beneficial insects\, and the features that attract them to a crop. \nYou will leave with a better understanding of how monitoring can fit into your farm practices\, samples of some insect pests\, and a resource list to help you continue to build an IPM strategy for your farm. \nThis workshop is open to both large and small scale farmers\, and will focus on pests of berries\, brassicas and carrots. Provided information will be applicable to organic and conventional growers. SUMMARY:Central Okanagan Field Day > Postharvest Deficit Irrigation for Improving Sweet Cherry Resilience to Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:What:\n \nJoin Dr. Louise Nelson and graduate students Kirsten Bevandick and Elizabeth Houghton from the University of British Columbia (Okanagan) for a field tour where they will discuss the methods and results of a three-year study researching the effects of reduced postharvest irrigation on sweet cherry plant function and fruit yield and quality. \nAbout the Research: \nPostharvest deficit irrigation (PDI) can reduce water demands in sweet cherry orchards and decreasing postharvest watering by up to 25 % in the Okanagan Valley has been found to not significantly affect plant function\, growth\, or fruit yield and quality. However\, the effects of further postharvest water reductions were unknown. To extend current knowledge of the upper limits of PDI that can be applied\, full irrigation of growers practice (100%) and water reductions of 27-33% full irrigation and 47-52% full irrigation were applied postharvest in five commercial sweet cherry orchards that ranged in elevation and latitude in the Okanagan Valley over a three-year period (2019-2021).
