Ponds for livestock surface water

A 2017 project developed a prototype tool to forecast the risk of water loss for individual ponds in BC’s southern interior rangeland. The tool was designed to help the ranching industry and resource managers proactively adapt to changes in water availability.

The project developed two models to provide a risk assessment for individual ponds:

  • A climate model
  • A pond assessment model

The models were incorporated into a prototype interactive tool. The summary report identifies additional steps needed to refine the prototype before it could be shared or used broadly.

A series of projects in the Cariboo have effectively advanced an alternative, range unit level, approach.
