Delta Farmers Institute water and salinity monitoring program

This project built on previous projects and provided technical support & expertise to ensure that the online salinity interface and monitoring stations function optimally throughout the 2022 production season and are integrated effectively into a DFI website as it is built. In addition to installing and maintaining monitoring within the irrigation system, this project also worked to build linkages between the improved salinity data and on-farm irrigation and salinity management. A final element of the project was to develop a plan for the ongoing expansion, maintenance, and oversight of the salinity monitoring system. This included establishing the near-, mid- and long-term goals and objectives of the system, defining the roles of the various stakeholders, and summarizing the needs (both human and financial resourcing) into the future. The development of this plan included engagement with all program stakeholders, including the Delta Farmers Institute, agricultural producers, and the City of Delta.

Objectives:

  • Expand the salinity monitoring program in Delta’s irrigation and drainage system.
  • Determine agricultural producer priorities for improved irrigation management.
  • Strengthen linkages between salinity data interface and on-farm irrigation and salinity management.
  • Develop a plan for longer-term expansion, maintenance, and oversight of the salinity monitoring system.
