These fact sheets provide information on the development stages for wine grapes (phenology). They identify historical trends as well as how the stages of maturity differ across the Okanagan Valley and for different varieties.
Each fact sheet covers a different stage and is based on data provided by Okanagan growers:
- Budbreak: when the first green leaf tips are showing in early spring
- Flowering: when 50% of caps fall
- Veraison: when 50% of berries soften and change color
Understanding when different wine grape varieties mature allows growers to plan seasonal crop management. When used with climate projections, phenology models can help growers decide which varieties are best suited to changing climatic conditions.
